Why Cratewell

Built for one person with a lot of data.

Most cloud drives are tuned for documents and shared folders. Cratewell is tuned for the other case: one owner, several machines, and terabytes of photos, footage, projects and server dumps.

Always-on sync

The client keeps one persistent, multiplexed connection open, so a change on one machine lands on the others in seconds — not on the next poll.

Full-speed transfers

No per-account throttling and no daily caps. Parallel block streams fill a gigabit link in both directions.

Zero-knowledge encryption

Files are encrypted on your device before upload. We store ciphertext only and can’t read, scan or index what’s inside.

Versions & rollback

Every save becomes a version. Roll a single file or a whole folder back to any minute — after a bad edit, or after ransomware.

Smart placeholders

Keep a 4 TB library visible on a 256 GB laptop. Files download when you open them and are evicted when space runs low.

Headless backup

Run cratewell-agent on servers and NAS boxes: scheduled snapshots, retention rules and restores straight from the command line.

How it works

Set it up once. Then forget it exists.

The desktop apps do this with a few clicks. On servers, it’s three commands.

Sign in this device

Authorize the machine in your browser. Its encryption key is generated locally and wrapped with your password.

$ cratewell login

Pick what goes in the crate

Add folders, drives or mount points. Cratewell indexes them once and then only watches for changes.

$ cratewell add ~/Projects ~/Photos
indexing… 412,880 files
✓ 2 folders · 1.27 TB queued

Let it run

The client stays connected in the background and streams changes as they happen, day and night.

  3. Deduplicated at the sync gatewayBlocks we already have for your account are skipped, not re-sent
